bio

Anja Hitzenberger is a visual artist working mainly with photography, video, and installation. Her current focus is on urban spaces and changing environments and how these changes effect our society.

Her photography and film work has been exhibited in group and one-person shows, and screened at film festivals throughout Europe, the United States, South America and Asia. She has created video and photography installations that have been presented in galleries and theaters as part of live performances around the world. She studied at the International Center of Photography (ICP full-time program) in New York, where she is now on the faculty and teaches storytelling and composition photography classes, as well as live online classes to students around the world.

Anja is the founder of strudelmediaLIVE, a program of live, online, and interactive photography classes that take place in realtime. And she's on the artistic board of Reflektor Books, which offers support to artists in the realization of self-published photo-books.

She has completed residencies in Rome, Paris, Warsaw and Beijing and has received numerous grants, among others a Swing Space grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York, to create “Changing Room,” a site-specific photography installation with live performance (”The most bewitching part of the evening was the dance created by Ms. Hitzenberger’s camera” — The New York Times).

She completed two short films together with composer/filmmaker Edward Ratliff: “Barcelona in 48 Hours,” about the choreographer David Zambrano; and “The Paris Film,” a fiction short featuring the performer Jimena Paz. A live multimedia performance version of "Barcelona in 48 Hours" premiered on stage at Dance Theater Workshop in New York City, and toured to Impuls Tanz Dance Festival in Vienna, Austria, and to Modafe Festival in Seoul, Korea.

Originally from Salzburg, Austria, she divides her time between New York and Vienna, Austria, and she enjoys collaborating with artists from different disciplines on site-specific architecturally-aware pieces.
